Prost, Oktoberfest!
Written by Rachel Gyarmati
Since the beginning of time, FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out) has plagued man. One of the most famous instances is one Aaron Burr, who desperately wanted to be “In the Room Where It Happens” when building America in the 1700s.
He wanted to be part of the conversations and then the notoriety that came with establishing one of the world’s most powerful nations. This obsession with being included led to a bitter rivalry that rocked Colonial America.
Hamilton references aside, modern FOMO isn’t as serious but is still a bummer. FOMO is now more about missing out on experiences. Having experienced this horrible emotion myself, I feel obligated to let you in on the celebration of the year, Oktoberfest.
I’ll do all the work, and you can apply them to your time at Oktoberfest Pittsburgh. Auf geht es, or let’s go, as the kids say. You can repay me by stopping by the Bierhall or Biergarten during Oktoberfest.
The Lore
As a nerd, I’d be doing you an injustice by giving you a rundown of the origin of Oktoberfest. Feel free to share these with your friends and family as you stroll into our Bierhall.
Here’s what you should know:
- The first Oktoberfest was held on October 17, 1810 (thus the name), and lasted three days.
- Oktoberfest was originally to celebrate the marriage of the Crowned Prince of Bavaria, who would later become King.
- The meadow where Oktoberfest was held in 1810 is still the current location for Oktoberfest.
- In 1905, Oktoberfest was officially moved to September to allow for better weather. Oktober in Germany is cold and rainy, so the move allowed for Germans to soak in the last days of warm weather for the season.
Now that you have your talking points let’s move on to our ultimate guide to this year’s Oktoberfest!
The Place to Be During Oktoberfest
Without hesitation, Hofbräuhaus Pittsburgh will be the best place to have an authentic Oktoberfest with your friends and family. This is especially true if your crew includes many people or kids.
I know I’ll be present celebrating Oktoberfest every weekend in September at Our Haus, beginning September 13th.
Come for a quick burst of Oktoberfest, or stay to get your oom-pa-pa on! If you’re not yet convinced, think about this: where else can you dance on the seats or have authentic German music just feet away?
Each night of Oktoberfest will be its own musical experience. Two of my favorite acts to be featured are the Alpen Glow Trio and the fantastic Paul Milovac. Trust me, you’re going to need your dancing shoes.
No Need for FOMO
What if you don’t want to be in a crowd but still want to taste Oktoberfest? That’s a good question. I see you, and I suggest picking up some yummy takeout on the way home. Our online ordering page makes this an easy stop and will make you a hero at home.
If you’re working during Oktoberfest, we can still include you. We cater to businesses and large parties. What a fun option for the workplace! Just FYI: We cannot guarantee your work would cater to Bier, but if this is a personal event (of any size), we’re happy to oblige.
Speaking of Bier, I am happy to confirm that our fantastic selection will be here for you to enjoy. We ensure an authentic German Bier by following our 400-year-old recipe.
The following Biers are our most fun and authentic, in my opinion.
- Dunkel (5.5% ABV) has caramel undertones and is super smooth. It also has a delicious roasted flavor, perfect for ringing in the fall.
- Hefe Weizen (5.4% ABV) has a beautiful golden color. The banana and clove scent and flavor give the brew a bright flavor.
- The Original Lager (5.2% ABV) is the one that started it all 400 years ago. Its taste is crisp, and the finish is refreshing. I love it because it’s not too filling and pairs well with Reuben balls.
You know that we also have a Bier to celebrate Oktoberfest.
Next month (September), our Seasonal Brew will be the Oktoberfest (6.3% ABV / 35 IBU).
- It starts malty sweet and ends with a bit of spice from our hops.
- Perfect to hold in the air as you sing your favorite German bar song.
As you can tell, I’m a bit excited to celebrate Oktoberfest next month with all of you. Although we celebrate our heritage daily, it’s Oktoberfest that brings out the best of us. Be sure to tag us in photos to see all the fun you have next month.
Happy Oktoberfest, Pittsbugh!
Prost!
